Are Business Cards Outdated? 7 Rules to Follow When Designing Your Cards

By Aundrea Friedley β€’ Published on February 6, 2013

Technology is moving fast, and what was relevant at the beginning of this sentence may have changed already. But let’s think about business cards: Are they relevant anymore? Do they have a place in networking and day-to-day business operations? My answer to that is absolutely.

Business cards have not lost their value, but there are some critical things to think about when designing and ordering them. Here are 7 rules to follow when designing your business cards:

  1. Make sure that your card can be scanned: Today's mobile apps and digital card scanners need to decipher the text. Looks and artistic fonts are great, but can the receiver read and understand your contact details? Also, keep in mind the over-40 crowd (I say that because I am in it!). Our eyesight changes, so a slightly larger, cleaner font can make the difference between getting the call or getting overlooked.
  2. Make sure they are vibrant and stand out: Your card will sit among hundreds of cards your prospects handle each month. High-contrast colors, crisp text, and premium heavy cardstock make a powerful physical statement.
  3. Ensure all key contact info is included: Your direct phone, email, website URL, and business name. Believe it or not, some people forget to put their actual name or phone number on the card!
  4. Include a physical address or service area: Customers want to see where you are located or enter your address into their GPS to find you easily.
  5. Put a QR Code on your card: A QR code lets anyone scan your card with their smartphone camera to instantly visit your website, save your contact vCard, or view your portfolio.
  6. Utilize the back of the card: The back of your card is your most valuable real estate! Unless you specifically need it blank for writing notes, use the back to list your core services, your brand slogan, or a promotional offer.
  7. Keep your shape functional: While novelty shapes can be fun for boutiques, standard 3.5" x 2" (or sleek rounded corners) fit effortlessly into all wallets, cardholders, and business scanners.

Business cards remain one of the highest ROI marketing tools available. You should review your business card design at least once a year to keep your branding modern, fresh, and relevant!
